Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder that normally affects your colon or the large intestine. It causes abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, cramping and bloating gas. If you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome these contractions may be longer and stronger than normal. This causes food to be passed through the colon rapidly causing bloating gas and diarrhea. However in some cases the contractions may be shorter and weaker than normal causing food to be passed slowly leading to constipation. Usually the food doesn’t move via the digestive system of anyone suffering from irritable bowel syndrome properly due to signals traveling forth and back to the gut controlling the nerves.

The problems could be intolerance to dairy products, artificial sweeteners or caffeine.

Although stress triggers and worsens the signs and symptoms it doesn’t cause them. Experts have realized that a lot of people who suffer from this syndrome experienced trauma in their childhood for instance bereavement, childhood illness, neglect or abuse.
Women are at a higher risk of suffering from irritable bowel syndrome due to hormonal changes. For instance women find the symptoms and signs worsening during their menstrual cycle. Since the causes of irritable bowel syndrome aren’t known treatment mainly focus on relieving the symptoms. Learning to control stress and making changes in your lifestyle and diet are very important in healing this condition.
