Is It Possible For Menopause to Cause Irritable Bowel Syndrome?


In the past year or so, you may have found out that you are going through menopause. While there are many changes that you are likely already experiencing, there is one thing that you may not have expected to have to deal with.

When you are going through menopause, your hormones are going to start dropping. It is possible that the sudden drop in certain hormones, such as estrogen, could cause you to experience some of the most common symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

The stress of menopause may also be a contributing factor. Women tend to feel stressed out when they are going through such a major lifestyle change.

Although there is still a lot of research that needs to be performed to make a complete connection between both IBS and menopause, there is a strong belief that women who are going through menopause may suddenly start dealing with IBS too. If you are unsure how to determine whether or not this is a problem for you, it is important for you to learn more about the signs and symptoms of IBS.

One of the first symptoms that you may experience is cramping of the stomach, which results in having to use the bathroom. In fact, you may not feel any bit of relief of those stomach pains until you actually get to use the bathroom. You may also suddenly notice that you are having trouble with certain types of food. Food items that you would normally eat may actually start bothering you and causing you to have to run to the toilet.

Some foods may make you take frequent bowel movements and can even cause excessive diarrhea. Acidic fruits and vegetables, such as tomatoes, can often make this happen. If you find yourself constantly running over to the toilet, there is a fairly good chance that you are suffering from IBS. You may feel constipated one day and then suddenly struggle to get off of the toilet the next day.

For example, you should stop drinking carbonated beverages that can often contribute to stomach pain. Consider drinking lots of water each day instead.

When you first start drinking the water, it may make you feel like you have to use the bathroom more often, but then your body will start to get used to it. Aside from drinking water, you should avoid drinking cow’s milk, which is also known to contribute to constipation and other stomach problems, such as gas.

However, this does not mean you have to give up drinking some chocolate milk or using it in your cereal. You can simply replace it with almond milk or soy milk, both of which are great substitutes.

Greasy food should be avoided. It is not wise to eat fast food frequently when you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome. Make sure that you are eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, but understand that certain ones may trigger your IBS.

Keep a food journal so that you are aware of which fruits and vegetables bother you and which ones do not bother you at all. Some of the options that may trigger IBS include apple juice, pineapple and peaches.

Despite going gluten-free, you will still be able to eat certain foods that you like. However, you may notice that after you switch to this specific diet, the symptoms of IBS suddenly start to subside. Along with going gluten-free, stick with lean meat and fish, but make sure that you are baking your entrees instead of frying them.

Although you may not have dealt with irritable bowel syndrome until you started going through menopause, there are ways to cope with the sudden symptoms you are experiencing.

If you are willing to make quite a few dietary changes, you may be able to improve the way that you feel. Not only are the healthier options good for putting a stop to the IBS, but they are also good for your health.
