Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder that is known to have no specific trigger. There are layers of muscle in the walls of the intestines. These normally contract and relax in a very coordinated manner that pushes the food from the stomach, to the intestines and finally to the rectum. When a person is said to have irritable bowel syndrome, the unified synchronized movement of food is not the case. The process might be too fast or too slow. When food is passed in the intestines too fast, gas, diarrhea and bloating is expected of the person. When the food is passed too slow, stool becomes too dry and flatulence might also occur. This is because the longer the digested food stays in the colon; the more the water gets absorbed from it. Abnormalities in your colon might also be experienced hence discomfort when your intestines stretch from gas.
Abnormal serotonin level is also a factor that leads to ibs. This is a chemical messenger that plays a role in the digestion of food. There is no specific reason or explanation to what causes ibs (irritable bowel syndrome) but there are some factors believed to trigger the condition. Some factors can be controlled while others can not. It is important to understand the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome before hand for proper care and caution.
Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome
(a) Abdominal pain- this is usually the major symptom that people suffering from ibs experience. The pain can range from mild to severe depending on the severity of the problem.
(b) A bloated stomach- This in most cases is as a result of gas and flatulence. One might pass out a lot of gas in this case or simply feel bloated all through. It can be quite uncomfortable and might be the reason for abdominal pains which one might also experience. This also varies from mild to severe.
(c) Diarrhea- This symptom might be brought about due to the imbalance in the intestines. It might also be as a result of food sensitivity. Some food, for instance fatty and processed food might trigger diarrhea in some people which might also range from mild to severe.
(d) Constipation- This might be as a result of one postponing making a bowel movement hence having the water in the digested food reabsorbed back in to the body hence constipation
What causes ibs (irritable bowel syndrome)Â
It is proven that women tend to suffer from irritable bowel syndrome more than men do. This fact is also linked to the production of hormones which is relatively high in women than in men. Women are also said to suffer the symptoms of ibs when on their periods. The condition is also known to get worse when women hit their menopausal stage. This is also related to the fact that hormones play a major role in this process hence an imbalance in the intestines. However, men also suffer from the condition too but not as many as the women.
This is a major factor that is found out to play a major role in the trigger of irritable bowel syndrome. Certain foods definitely add more pressure on the intestines and also make the condition worse. These class of foods include; Milk, chocolate, alcohol, coffee, some fruits and grains and also carbonated drinks. Grains such as green grams and beans are known to cause flatulence and bloating which are some of the major signs of irritable bowel syndrome. Milk and chocolate are known to trigger diarrhea.
Carbonated drinks and some types of fruits are great factors that lead to severe bloating and stomach discomfort for people suffering from the condition. It is advisable for people who have experienced symptoms of this condition to steer away from these foods to avoid further complications. Foods that are also high in fat like processed foods are also to be avoided in order to control the condition. Foods that are also close to the expiry date are also known triggers to the condition. Some types of foods that take longer than usual to get digested should be avoided at all costs. This mainly includes meat products. Meat is estimated to take eight days to get fully digested. This automatically means that a strain in the intestines is created which aggravates the condition. Reducing meat intake to two or three times a week may be better as opposed to a more frequent intake.
This is a major factor to what causes ibs. Stress releases some hormones in to the body that interrupt its normal functioning. Proper food digestion is one of the interfered with processes hence a trigger of the condition. It is not a real cause in itself but a major contributor to the condition. People who have experienced irritable bowel syndrome have reported the condition to getting worse during stressful moments. It is a major trigger hence one is advised to keep calm in order to keep the condition under control.
People with irritable bowel syndrome are known to be very sensitive with out of the usual occurrences in the stomach. Trapped gas in the stomach is known to cause a big problem which makes the condition worse and uncontrollable.
Delayed bowel movement
When one ignores the call of nature and postpones making a bowel movement, irritable bowel syndrome occurs. This is because water is reabsorbed back into the system hence making the stool drier than usual. This in turn leads to constipation and also gas. Making a bowel movement when the urge arises is important in keeping the condition under control.
There is no specific reason given for the root cause of irritable bowel syndrome or what causes ibs. However, these known triggers to the condition are better off kept under control if the condition is to be made easier. It is also advisable to seek medical advice as soon as one experiences the symptoms. It might not always be irritable bowel syndrome; other diseases might be related too. A medical doctor might also prescribe some medication in instances where the condition is severe.
